CR: Critical Reflection

LINK:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/19aT3vYh07doP6sTxmuC6m-y2l0cS8gRzGzMERPoE1YM/edit Critical Reflection  Aice Media Studies A Level  How do your products represent social groups or issues?  My product, Shattered Bonds, represents social groups and issues in many ways, however there were two ways that were represented the most. Shattered Bonds shows how it's very difficult to make a trio friendship work, as there will always be a duo in a trio. Many people struggle with this reality on a daily basis and it is not a fun reality. Shattered Bonds engages with the idea that friend groups, mainly consisting of girls, aren’t as friendly as people believe they are. In many cases there's a constant fear of one being fake or secretly hating each other behind their backs. In Shattered Bonds we highlighted exclusion. Exclusion is one of the biggest signs when it comes to a struggling friendship and in many cases Kendall, who is played by Natalia, is being left ou...

Media Studies is one of my favorite classes as I enjoy the concept behind it. I thought it was super neat to fully understand how movies are made and how much attention to detail there needs to be. Before this class I never paid attention to the different angles and shots used. Now that I've taken Media Studies I realized that emotions aren't just portrayed through acting but also through the camera shots, angles and sounds. I've been taking media for two year...

Peer Reviews

Image
Welcome back to my blog! Now that Shattered Bonds is completely filmed and edited, my group and I wanted opinions from people in our class. The first person we asked was Jack Lynch. Jack is very blunt and straight to the point, so I knew that his critiques we're going to be good but harsh. However his reaction to Shattered Bonds was the complete opposite. He told us that our movie was well put together. My group and I's main concern was whether the plot twist was clear or not, and he told us it was so that was a huge relief. During his peer review though he could not stop laughing, this was concerning because Shattered Bonds is a Murder Mystery not a comedy. I asked him why he was laughing so much and he said it was because of the acting. I will say there are some scenes where the acting isn't the best. I'm mainly talking about the scene where I screamed when I found out Olivia went missing. That scene was super funny to film and it took many tries. He ended up rating o...

Editing Issue

Image
Welcome back to my blog! In a previous blog I talked about the editing process of our video. However, while watching the final project back I noticed slight mistakes. The first mistake I noticed is that while filming a phone call scene, Natalia used Jenna's real name instead of her character name. I'm thankful I found this because no one in my group did, as the scene was super quick. The first way my group and I attempted to solve this issue was by adding a voice over. Unfortunately, the voice over was very mumbled and you could tell we tried to hide an error. The not effect the voice over brought to the movie was making it feel rushed and messy. My group and I decided that we would just re-film that scene another day. This was a good plan until we checked our schedules. All of us were completely booked for the rest of the week and our movie is due the 14th. Everyone went into a panic as we had absolutely no time to re-film. Once everyone composed themselves, it was decided th...

Creation of The Postcard and Socials

Image
Welcome back to my blog! Today my group and I created the postcard and social media account. For the social media account, we used Instagram, Twitter, and Youtube. Sofia offered to create the account since she remembered, her password into her main account and because she had an extra emails she could use. It only took about 15 minutes for her to create the all the accounts. The first thing we did was add our username and bio. We created a username based on our movie title, Shattered Bonds. For our bio we wrote:  AICE Media Studies A level, 2024 Here we will post updates on our movie!  Producers are Natalia Sorbo, Carleigh Tripp, Sofia Di Campli, and Jenna Olson  Once that was complete we added a profile photo and it was the PDF version of our postcard.  we did this for every social media account except YouTube. Since youtube is more about posting videos, we just added a profile photo and a username. To make it easy on ourselves and the graders we used the same...

Time to Edit

Image
Welcome back! Last weekend we finished the filming of our movie, now it's time to edit. To edit our film we used iMovie and CapCut. Unfortunately Jenna got the Flu and has been out of school for the past couple days, so we haven't been able to work on it in class. Thanks to technology, we were able to collaborate on the editing through FaceTime. My group knew that I was such a bad editor, so Jenna and Sofia rook the lead on this one. However, I didn't want them to feel overwhelmed with the editing process, since it's super important, so I decided to offer my help. I offered my help by relying ideas, which they could use in the editing of our movie. The most important part of the editing process is making sure all the clips are in the correct order and that each clip used wad the clip each group member liked. If any of these steps are messed up our video would be completely ruined. So it's critical for each group member to really help with these two steps. If you we...

What Did I Do??

Image
Welcome Back! Today I was super excited to attend class because I had just finished my website. The website took me a whole week to create so naturally I was super excited to show it off. I showed all my friends who sit around me at my table with the biggest smile on my face. I made some final touches like centering photos and swapping the background color. Now that my website looked absolutely perfect, it was ready to be launched. Once I clicked publish my world came crashing down. I had to pay 17 dollars a month to keep my website up and running. How could this have happened. Before using SquareSpace, I researched to make sure it was 100% free, how could I have been so naive. Before deleting all my work, I tried to find a solution. I could publish the website however it would be private and only people with the password could access it. I asked my teacher if this would be okay and she said no because it would be impossible to send the code over to Cambridge. I was so disappointe...

Filming Day Two

Image
Welcome back blog! Yesterday on Saturday the 24th we filmed the rest of our scenes. We all met at Jennas house again because majority of the scenes needed to be filmed there. Before filming today we all made sure our schedules were completely clear. This was important because a large portion of our film occurs during the night time and last week when we tried to film at night Jenna had a dinner. For example, most of the flashback scenes that are being used are during the night, this gives off a eerie or suspenseful feeling. Once we all arrived at Jenna's, we headed over to a nearby elementary school to film our school scenes. We didn't have access to inside the school which was okay, because we only needed certain locations. At the school we only used the picnic tables outside the front gate, the parking lot and the front entrance of the school. After filming the school scenes we decided to switch up our scenes. We originally said that we were going to film at the beach; howev...

Creation of Our Website

Image
Welcome back! Today in class we began to make our website. My group and I started with the the website because we figured it was going to take the longest to create. I originally used Wix to create my website, but it was so confusing. I liked the concept of having the site plan the layout for you, however; the layout they gave me didn't meet my standards. When I tired to change out the photos, it wouldn't let me, unless I paid $15.99. I got super frustrated with the recommended site, so I found another one. I've been using SquareSpace. This site is super convenient and easy to use. I started by choosing the category, I chose marketing because the whole purpose of the website is to help promote our movie. Before I began working on my website, I wrote down the main things I wanted to cover. I wanted to include the title, a slogan, the goals of our movie, a meet the producers page, background information on the process of filming, and most importantly a link to our social med...

The Filming Begins

Image
Hey Blog, its the Tuesday after President's Day and there's a lot to discuss. As I mention in a pervious blog, before we started filming we needed to get props, well my group and I completely forgot about the props and just started filming. Since it was a Monday and my group and I had school the next day everyone was in a funky mood. Everyone was so lazy and didn't want to drive all around town, so we just filmed the scenes that were in a close proximity close to us. A majority of the scenes were filmed at Jenna's house. There are more scenes to be filmed at Jenna's house, but those scenes take place during the night. We could have filmed those scenes on Monday, however Jenna had a dinner at 5:30. The scenes we completed were 7-12, 13-18, and 43-48. As you can see we got throughout the day, there was a decent amount of scenes completed. BEGINNING OF FILMING We started the day by meeting at Jenna's house. I was a little worried I wouldn't be able to make it ...

Figuring Out Our Setbacks

Image
Hello Cambridge, welcome back to my blog. Today in class we were going to begin to create our props but we had a lecture on Media Ecology. Media Ecology is the study of hoe media and communication processes affect the human perception and understanding. We learned about different theorist too, such as Marshall McLuhan and Neil Postman. Although it's imperative that we learn this, it was detrimental to our filming timeline. This was going to set us back a day because now we have to dedicate a say to making props. I know your thinking why not have someone do it have home. Yes, I was thinking that as well, but our groups main priority is to contribute equally. This means that we don't want someone applying more effort than anyone else. This isn't too much of an issue because we can swap days around. We originally we're going to film on Monday since its President's Day, and we have school off, but since we were pushed back a day; we are going to do props Monday. Natal...

Why Is Everyone Busy??

Image
Today in class we dedicated our class time to choosing a day to film. Being in high school my group mates and I have many obligations. We used an online calendar to help us plan out the days we were all free. I am not exaggerating when I say this took us the entire class. Natalia just started a new job, so her work schedule is pretty packed. She considered taking days off; however, since she just started working there she wanted to make a good impression. This is highly understandable so she's looking for a day where she's not working. Due to recent events Jenna's mom has given her a curfew. She now has to be home at 5:30pm, not to mention she works weekends past her curfew most times. Luckily her boss is a little more lenient and always her to take days off. Sofia and I are mostly free, except for when we're piled down with school work. Thats easy to work around since we can get the work done ahead of time. After analyzing the calendar we noticed that we had no school...

Hello Cambridge, welcome back to my blog! Here is the outline of our movie using pictures and a short description.

Planning Blog

Image
Welcome back to my blog, today we are finally getting into the fun part of these blogs. Last week my group and I discussed how we wanted to begin filming. Thankfully our group is super easy going with not too tight of schedules so deciding how we want to plan was quite easy. We're planning on filming either next week or the week after. We figured that getting a jump on our video would be more beneficial as it leaves us with more time to edit and make any changes. Not to mention that we already know exactly where we're going to film and how we're going to execute the scenes. We're going to film our short movie at Jenna's house because her house meets in the middle of all the group members. She also has parks and stores nearby just in case we decide to film a scene in that type of setting. The only people that would be filming and participating in the creation of this short film would be Natalia, Jenna, Sofia, and Carleigh. We are going to have no additional people ...

Short Film Research

Image
Short film research: ( The Last Note/Mystery) Hey blogg. Today we will be discussing an award-winning mystery short film called "The Last Note" and pointing out different features within this film. For some background, the film begins with David driving to lake while taking about leaving his wife and all his problems with her. Then David is seen with a body bag which is Catherine and dumps her in a lake. He does this due to catching ehr cheating on him the night before. Once David returns home, he starts drinking a liquor while reading a book named Murder. In the book, there was a note from Catherine and as he reads to there are flashbacks to her putting posion in the bottle. He then relazies as she write “sorry I had to do this , goodbye David” and he passes away. To begin the sound purely consisted of voice-overs from both Catherine and David, the former husbands and wife, along with sound effects. In specific, dramatic sound effects were used which is very common withi...

How to Make a Short Film

Image
How to make a short film Hey Blog. This blog will discuss and evaluate the procedure of putting together a short film. The first important factor in starting the process of making a short film is identifying your budget. Understanding how much Knowing how many people will work with you and who will be a part of your cast is involved with the budget. This is very important to know to write up a plan for filming. Starting to write out a filming plan with the budget in mind is highly important. Knowing how much money can be sent and what resources are available to you plays a part in the budget and essentially the whole film. Smaller casts are usually common for shot films so keeping that in the plans is important. Knowing big fancy scenes like explosions can't be done because short films usually have limited money and resources. This makes creativity a highly important factor. Also, short films typically have a shorter duration than feature-length films, often ranging from a few mi...

La Jetee vs 12 Monkeys short film

Image
Prior to researching these two films I didn't realize how similar the two storylines were. I was distracted by the use of still images compared to video sequences to notice the plot. After watching “La Jetee vs 12 Monkeys… which is better?” I see that both films explore the idea of time travel and the consequences for your actions. La Jetee does this through the use of images to tell this provoking story. When creating our own short film we are able to take these to films and use them as inspiration. We want to incorporate more complex ideas that leave the audience thinking. I think our goal of our short film is to really throw the audience off track almost like a plot twist. We could maybe even incorporate the idea of a natural disaster just like La Jetee and 12 Monkeys. After watching the two films we also took the video style into consideration for our film. The La Jetee images are black and white so the film has an older, more dark feeling to it. For the 12 Monkeys film, cert...
