What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

The pictures Prioritized in the opening scene is a pan showing a Broken flower vase and a woman sitting in fear, crying out of only one of her eyes. Once the pan reaches the women sitting of the chair, there is an extreme close up and it ends up Turing into a transition. The transition goes to a black screen where they introduce the people behind the scenes.

What connotations do these images carry?

The connotation resides between the pan and the transition. The pan creates suspense because we don’t know what’s going to be revealed when the camera makes it 180 turn. It also leaves us with confusion, what happened that caused the Flower vase to break and is it important to the plot? The transition also leaves us with anxiety because we don’t know what’s happening behind her eyes, will it be another jump scare?

How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

The film establishes the feeling of the Thriller genre because of the music election. The music selections is very terrifying. Before the transition, the music sound like someone screaming from the end of a tunnel and its very static, like when your TV loses signal. Once we go through her eyes the music completely changes. It has a very fast paced beat, often heard in other thrillers. We then hear this demonic sounding screaming. Overall, the music made me scared to be in my room alone. It also established the suspense part pretty fast, especially with the transition as I stated above.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

Smile uses strategies that will make the movie appeal to Teenagers and Adults. They capture the creepy part very well with this move. For example, the main character experiences a traumatic event, suicide, leaving her with terrifying encounter which she believes to be the supernatural. Another strategy they used was the advertisement for this film. They sent out people to stand in public for hours and just smile. These acters didn’t move, blink, eat, drink, nothing stood completely still smiling. This was posted all over social media reaching every audience. People were posting about which helped the film receive great turnouts. The suspense of this movie is not only reached through the plot, but through all the Jump scares. This movie defiantly had people covering their eyes and creating much anxiety for the audience.

How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles,  transitions and editing techniques.

Technology has been used effectively 100 percent in this film. Editing techniques such as the jump scares were used effectively in the sense that you want your audience to be scared and know it’s coming but still unaware of exactly when. There were some birds eye views in the movie, leaving the viewer to feel the danger the protagonist is in. They use medium close ups and close ups to represent the emotions of the actors. The close ups are used in hopes that the audience will feel the emotion with the actors. For example, Anger, Sadness, Fear, Joy and so on.
